Outsider Art – Soul’s Expression

Διάρκεια Έκθεσης:
4 Oct 2019 to 22 Mar 2020

The exhibition presents work by V. Kalaitzis, Th. Koprianou, D. Zachou, A. Vandera, O. Kassoumi, D. Laiou, D. Rakogianni, H. Keridis, T. Tzantarma, H. Zapounidis, P. Tezapsidis and N. Cymes, which come mainly from the collection of psychiatrist-artist Pavlos Vasiliadis, but also from creators’ the collections of the themselves.

Pavlos Vassiliadis has established twenty-five years ago the Cultural Communication Unit (C.C.U.) of the Psychiatric Hospital of Thessaloniki, with the participation of artists with mental disorders and has organized in collaboration with C.C.U. many exhibitions in Greece and abroad.

The work of these self-taught artists is the result of a psychism, who, through a distinctive artistic language, direct, original and sincere, illustrates our world, bringing us into a new connection with reality.

This art is especially important because:

  • As a distinctive artistic language, is a new, well accepted area in the artistic world, without the need to adapt to society’s requirements and to dominant aesthetic. Especially since the beginning of the 20th century, it has been a source of inspiration for many modern artists, especially for expressionists and surrealists and continues to influence artists to this day.
  • This visual writing at the same time is a special communication language, very useful for understanding the patient / artist during psychotherapy.
  • It is related to destigmatization of mental disorder, as this creativity is now recognized as part of the overall human experience and as a long journey, in which these artists are no longer anonymous patients but they have become individuals with their own identities.

The exhibition is under the auspices of the Presidency of the Hellenic Republic and the official opening will be held on October 27, 2019, by His Excellency the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Prokopios Pavlopoulos.
